Stacher commented: “The clashes between the Egyptian state and demonstrators in Mahalla al-Kubra reveal the social pain produced by irresponsible neoliberal economic reform coupled with a political system utterly devoid of peaceful channels of participation for citizens to be able to express discontent. Considering that the state is either uninterested or unable to address the origins of the problem, one can expect social resentment to continue to ferment.”

Joshua Stacher is assistant professor of political science at Kent State University. He specializes in authoritarian adaptation of Arab republican regimes with special reference to Egypt and Syria. He also has published on topics such as the Muslim Brotherhood, Wasat movement, opposition politics and presidential elections in authoritarian contexts, and human rights in Egypt.
